Sent Belac off to school and then it was just me and Jake. Threw an egg, leftover salmon, and frozen peas into yesterday's rice and fried it all up with a little sesame oil, soy sauce and garlic salt. It was breakfast and also lunch in his thermos. He sat with his bowl of fried rice in the porch, marveling over our new printer with me and watching it xerox a whole stack of his tests and projects since mid-January. It's such a ridiculous system. You get all of your graded work of like 8 weeks in one day to look over for the first time, and then you send it all back on the very next day, not to be seen for the rest of the year. How do you learn from your mistakes if you can't go through your graded work carefully and within days of a given test or assignment? Is that all that matters, ultimately, the grade? I have complained a few times about this system, already, but to no avail. It's the way it's always been done and so we just make do with this nonsense.
Packing up, I noticed that Jake didn't do part of an assignment correctly. He erased and corrected. It was now getting late. What time is it? I asked, as I helped him wet down his hair. He didn't have his watch on (again.) Grab your watch, I'll pack your bag and you have to scram, sweetie pie!
See you later, Mom! he hollered as he ran out the door with just 3 minutes until the bell. He was going to be late.
Have a good day! I called after him as I watched him run down the street.
